Big Data Deminar 5: Assessing pre-service and in-service teacher quality: Mapping 'high leverage
10:30 - 12:00, 20 October 2017

Speaker: Dr Brent Duckor
While research has shown for decades that teachers who engage in formative assessment (FA) practices may have the most powerful impact on student learning (Hattie, 2012), less is known about the development of teachers’ knowledge and use of formative assessment as they plan, enact, and reflect on their classroom instructional practice. Sharing examples from empirical case studies in both pre- and in-service contexts, I will introduce a new FA framework (Duckor & Holmberg, 2017) for revealing how middle school math and science teachers take up specific 'high leverage' moves during classroom instruction. Employing a teacher learning progressions framework, the implications for FA-focused teacher professional development and teacher licensure — using trajectories of big data grounded in video lesson study that fosters teachers’ attention to equity and academic language demands—are also considered.
