Senior Research Assistant,

The Education University of Hong Kong

TOPIC:

The Application of Computerized Adaptive Testing – Where We Are and Where Should We Be Heading?

BIOGRAPHY:

Mr. Chia-Wen CHEN is a PhD candidate in EdUHK. He has published the journal papers and book chapters about the reliability, validity, Rasch analysis, and the psychometric modeling for ranking items. Chia-Wen also presented the application of the computerized adaptive testing in the international conferences of American Educational Research Association and the International Meeting of the Psychometric Society. His major is the educational measurement, item response theory, Rasch analysis, and computerized adaptive testing.

ABSTRACT:

The Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) based on Item Response Theory (IRT) has been developed and applied in the educational assessment. This seminar aims to give you an overview of the application of CAT in the large-scale testing program. The examples of developments of CAT such as the anxiety and depression test, the achievement of mathematics, and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) are shown. Additionally, to expend the utility of CAT, I review the several extended issues including the cognitive diagnostic CAT that provides the students’ mastery level on the attributes, the multidimensional CAT that measures the multidimensional latent traits, CAT with response time modeling that considers the response time to each item in CAT, and the adaptive learning that provides the one-to-one teaching to students. The practical and academic challenges of CAT are discussed at the end of the presentation.
